Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions should I expect to attend?
The therapeutic process is different for every person and length of counselling will depend on a number of factors. On average, clients will attend 6-12 sessions to address less complex issues/challenges – this is considered short-term counselling. However, each client’s needs, interests, preferences, and goals will vary, which will also impact the length of time one will participate in counselling. More brief interventions will be appropriate for some clients, whereas some clients need or request more long-term services.
How much will this cost me?
It is important to look at the costs involved in therapy as being investments for your psychological, emotional, spiritual, personal, and professional health. Just like a runner would invest in a good quality pair of running shoes for better support, longevity, and performance, the same goes for our psychological health if we want to promote our individual growth, understanding, happiness, and mental health longevity.
In regards to fees, psychotherapy services are not covered by OHIP. However, psychological services and psychotherapy services are covered by some extended health care insurance plans. The average cost is $120-$160 per session, and a sliding scale for fees is available.
What can I expect at my first session and subsequent sessions?
Our first session together will involve an intake portion of the session. During this time, I will ask you questions to find out more about what brought you to counselling and about what concerns, questions, and goals that you have for attending counselling. We will work together to develop a plan of action to address your specific needs and goals that is based on your interests, strengths, and resources.
For some cases, I find it is helpful to allot additional time for our intake session so I may suggest an 80 minute session instead. This gives us some extra time for me to gather more information and to ensure that we are able to address all the information and questions you may have about the process, how we can work together, and start focusing on our therapeutic goals right away.
Each therapy session will be 50 minutes in length and subsequent sessions will continue to focus on working towards your counselling goals using an eclectic combination of empirically-validated therapeutic approaches. We will regularly check in on your goals and goal progress to make sure that our time together continues to be meaningful for you.
